How to Choose a Cybersecurity Certificate Program
Online certificates in cyber security seem like the ideal solution for busy professionals. They give you core skills with none of the fluff. They’re quick. They’re marketable. And they cover the latest developments in security. But only if you pick the right program! Before you throw good money after a poor investment, take a minute to:
- Pay attention to the curriculum
- Online undergraduate certificates may deal with foundation courses or special topics. Online graduate certificates can be broad in scope (e.g. network security) or focused on a field of advanced expertise (e.g. cyber security engineering). Some certificates are even set up as training programs for major certification exams (e.g. Security+, CISSP, CISM, etc.). Choose wisely.
- Investigate credit transfers
- You may not wish to transfer your credits to a bachelor’s or master’s degree immediately, but don’t discount the future. Find out which certificate credits (hopefully all of them) can be transferred to what degrees (hopefully the strongest cyber security programs that the school has to offer).
- Think about the school’s reputation
- Online certificate coursework is usually pulled from degree programs, so it’s useful to know about the strengths and weaknesses of a school. For example, universities in the D.C. area may be particularly strong in government security subjects. Computer science departments in California may have great insights into Silicon Valley issues.
- Scour the web for reviews and online rankings

The Professional Certificate in Cyber Security is designed for working professionals who want to gain the skills but who do not have a four-year degree. The Cyber Security Graduate Certificate is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree and who want to take advanced classes but who can’t commit to a master’s program. Applicants to either program should have computer knowledge equivalent to that needed to earn the Network+ certification.
